I was born in Münster and began my education at the Westphalian School of Music there. Afterwards I continued my studies at the Freiburg, Cologne and Mannheim Conservatories with Prof. Ingeborg Most, Prof. Hans Sotin and Prof. Rudolf Piernay.
In 1990 I won the 1st prize at the national singing competition in Berlin. This was followed by radio, television and CD productions with the Bavarian Radio, the West German Radio, the SWR and the ZDF. In 1995 I became a prize winner at the Master Singers Competition in Nuremberg.
In addition to my work as an oratorio singer, I made guest appearances at various theaters during his studies, including the Freiburg Theater and the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau.
At the age of 28 I made my debut at the Regensburg Theater as Sarastro in Mozart’s „Magic Flute“. Afterwards I went to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where I appeared on stage as the Speaker in „The Magic Flute“, Joe in Weill’s „Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny“, King in Verdi’s „Aida“ and Titurel in Wagner’s „Parsifal“, among others. In 2002 I made my debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Master Schwarz in „Meistersinger“ and Edler in „Lohengrin“.
For five years I worked as a member of the ensemble at the Theater Bielefeld, where I sang the roles of Alfonso in Mozart’s „Cosi fan tutte“, Daland in Wagner’s „Holländer“, Waldner in Strauss‘ „Arabella“, Rocco in Beethoven’s „Fidelio“ and Pogner in Wagner’s „Meistersinger“, among others.
Since 2005 I have been working as a freelance opera and oratorio singer. In the 2006/2007 season I was heard at the Stadttheater Giessen as Komptur in „Don Giovanni“ and Agent in „Gala Gala“. I also made guest appearances as Angelotti in „Tosca“ at the Theater Mönchengladbach and as Sarastro in a touring production in Belgium. In the 2008/2008 season Hans Griepentrog sang Meister Folz in „Meistersinger“ at the Staatstheater Darmstadt as well as the „Soldat“ in Salome at the Grând Théâtre de Génève.
I have sung 50 opera roles and 60 concert roles under the direction of Christian Thielemann, Donald Runnicles, Stefan Soltesz, Thomas Hengelbrock and Marek Janowsky.
Since my student days I have been teaching as a voice teacher. Currently I am working at the Städt. Hans Werner Henze Music School in Berlin and as a private teacher.
In my spare time, I oversee the concert series and music label Berliner Orgelpower, which I founded in 2011.
Ich bin gebürtiger Münsteraner und begann meine Ausbildung an der dortigen Westfälischen Schule für Musik. Danach führte ich mein Studium an der Freiburger, Kölner und Mannheimer Musikhochschule bei Prof. Ingeborg Most, Prof. Hans Sotin und Prof. Rudolf Piernay fort.
1990 gewann ich beim Bundeswettbewerb Gesang in Berlin den 1. Preis. Es folgten Rundfunk-, Fernseh- und CD-Produktionen mit dem Bayrischen Rundfunk, dem Westdeutschen Rundfunk, dem SWR und dem ZDF, 1995 wurde ich Preisträger beim Meistersängerwettbewerb in Nürnberg.
Neben meiner Tätigkeit als Oratoriensänger gastierte ich während seiner Studienzeit an verschiedenen Theatern, u.a. dem Freiburger Theater und dem Anhaltischen Theater Dessau.

Fünf Jahre arbeitete ich als Ensemblemitglied am Theater Bielefeld, wo ich die Partien u.a. des Alfonso in Mozarts „Cosi fan tutte“, Daland in Wagners „Holländer“, Waldner in Strauss‘ „Arabella“, Rocco in Beethovens „Fidelio“ und Pogner in Wagners „Meistersinger“ sang.
Seit 2005 arbeite ich frei als Opern- und Oratoriensänger. In der Saison 2006/2007 war ich am Stadttheater Gießen als Komptur in “Don Giovanni” und Agent in “Gala Gala” zu hören. Außerdem gastierte ich als Angelotti in “Tosca” am Theater Mönchengladbach sowie als Sarastro in einer Tourneeproduktion in Belgien. In der Saison 2008/2008 sang Hans Griepentrog Meister Folz in “Meistersinger” am Staatstheater Darmstadt sowie den “Soldat” in Salome am Grând Théâtre de Génève.
50 Partien im Opernfach sowie 60 Partien im Konzertfach habe ich gesungen, u.a. unter der Leitung von Christian Thielemann, Donald Runnicles, Stefan Soltesz, Thomas Hengelbrock und Marek Janowsky.
Seit meiner Studienzeit unterrichte ich als Gesangslehrer. Zurzeit arbeite ich an der Städt. Hans Werner Henze Musikschule in Berlin und als Privatlehrer.
In meiner Freizeit betreue ich die Konzertreihe und das Musiklabel Berliner Orgelpower, welches ich 2011 gegründet habe.
