I was born in Münster and began my musical education at the Westphalian School of Music there. Afterwards I continued my studies at the conservatories of Freiburg, Cologne, and Mannheim with Prof. Ingeborg Most, Prof. Hans Sotin, and Prof. Rudolf Piernay.
In 1990 I won first prize at the National Singing Competition in Berlin. This was followed by radio, television, and CD productions with Bavarian Radio, West German Radio, SWR, and ZDF. In 1995 I became a prizewinner at the Master Singers Competition in Nuremberg.
In addition to my work as an oratorio singer, I made guest appearances at various theaters during my studies, including Theater Freiburg and the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau.
At the age of 28, I made my debut at Theater Regensburg as Sarastro in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Afterwards I joined the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where I appeared as the Speaker in The Magic Flute, Joe in Weill’s Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, the King in Verdi’s Aida, and Titurel in Wagner’s Parsifal, among others. In 2002 I made my debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Master Schwarz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and as one of the Nobles in Lohengrin.
For five years I worked as a member of the ensemble at Theater Bielefeld, performing roles such as Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Daland in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Waldner in Strauss’s Arabella, Rocco in Beethoven’s Fidelio, and Pogner in Wagner’s Meistersinger.
Since 2005 I have worked as a freelance opera and oratorio singer. In the 2006/07 season I appeared at Stadttheater Gießen as the Commendatore in Don Giovanni and the Agent in Gala Gala. I also made guest appearances as Angelotti in Tosca at Theater Mönchengladbach and as Sarastro in a touring production in Belgium. In the 2008/09 season I sang Master Folz in Meistersinger at Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Soldier in Salome at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
I have performed more than fifty opera roles and sixty concert works under the direction of Christian Thielemann, Donald Runnicles, Stefan Soltész, Thomas Hengelbrock, and Marek Janowski.
Since my student days I have been teaching voice. I currently work at the Hans Werner Henze Music School in Berlin and also teach privately.
In my spare time I curated the concert series and music label Berliner Orgelpower, which I founded in 2011.
